Bereavement Support South Worcestershire

Bereavement Support South Worcestershire provides an opportunity for children, adolescents and families to share their feelings and develop strategies for managing their bereavement. We can support children and families on their own or with group support. Parents and guardians can access counselling or advice on supporting a bereaved child.

Edward Dent died aged seven years. Through the pain and grief of their loss his parents, Peter and Hilary Dent decided to try and help other families. Edward’s Trust was set up in 1989 to fulfil that very personal mission.

Edward’s Trust is a specialist provider of holistic family bereavement support for the West Midlands area based in Edgbaston, Birmingham. They provide support for bereaved children, young people, and parents. Edwards Trust has 34 years of experience and operates at the highest level, providing qualified counselling and holistic support for complex or prolonged grief.

Cancer Aid Merthyr Tydfil is a registered charity that provides a free service to those whose lives have been touched by cancer living withing the County Borough of Merthyr Tydfil.

All our services are free of charge and are available to cancer clients, relatives, carers and those bereaved.

Counselling – A free counselling service is provided for clients and their families including one to one sessions – group sessions and bereavement counselling. Children’s counselling for five years + is available.

Groups – The following groups are run on a monthly basis, Creative Stress Busting, Support Group for Grief & Loss and Writing Therapy.

Aromatherapy – A gentle massage using essential oils selected to suit each client’s particular needs. It helps to relieve stress, tension and aches and pains. It promotes relaxation, resulting in more restful sleep. Reiki and Indian Head massage are also available.

Reflexology – Involves stimulating reflexes on the feet through massage, helping the body to re-balance and maintain good health, it assists many conditions, and provides a feeling of general well being.

Acupuncture – This is a system of healing which has been practised for thousands of years. By inserting fine needles into the channels of energy an acupuncturist can stimulate the bodies own healing response and help restore balance.

Drop In Centre – A drop in centre is provided from Monday Friday 10am 4pm. The Centre always has a volunteer available to make a cup of tea – have a chat or give information and support.

Cardiff Sands

We are a local SANDS Group started in 2006.

At that time – no local SANDS group existed – the nearest being based in Llandridnod Wells – Powys SANDS. Having been in contact a few bereaved parents form the Cardiff area via The National SANDS forums – It was HeatherJane and Dave Coombs who decided we should set up a support group in the Cardiff area – and Cardiff SANDS was born.

From humble beginnings – we initially set up local support groups with two of our original members – Dave and Heather attending Befriender Training to help others going through the devastating loss of a baby. We started organising a few fundraising and publicity events to try and promote our group and the work of the SANDS charity as a whole

Cardiff Sands hold meetings on the last Thursday of every month.

Balloons is a charity that provides community-based support for children, young people and their families from Exeter, Mid or East Devon following the death, or before an expected death, of a significant person in their lives, such as a parent, carer or sibling.

Children’s Hospice South West

The support we give extends to the whole family, into bereavement and beyond for as long as each family needs us.

The Sibling Service also provides specific support for bereaved children, working according to the family needs. They make use of crafts to support the grieving process, for example, making memory boxes, items for the funeral, or to put in the coffin. Children can be accompanied when visiting their sibling in Starborn if they would like this, and they can provide specific support for siblings at funerals. Follow-up support is then offered at home and contact is maintained by telephone, cards, emails and home visits. This is all carried out alongside the family relationship with Contact Pairs from the Care Team.

Based in Newton Abbot but Clients are visited in own homes or agreed venue. Paul’s Fund

Paul’s Fund is a charitable trust that makes grants for a holiday break to young adults aged approx. 18 to 30 who – amongst other criteria – have been bereaved through the loss of a child. The holidays are to be taken at Paul’s Place which is located in the delightful village of Georgeham near Croyde on the beautiful North Devon coast and offers both B&B and Self-Catering accommodation. Grants from Paul’s Fund will cover the full accommodation costs of up to six people (the young adult plus a partner, family members or a friend) along with travel and daily allowances. The self catering cottage only accommodates two people but the B&B has three guest rooms (twin and double).

ABYSS is a place to be yourself – in the utterly changed circumstances in which you find yourself – and take strength from the support of others – who know your pain – before returning to daily life and it’s challenges.

The group lives – breathes and grows from a simple ethos – we meet – we listen – we talk – we can be silent. We respect each other’s differences and we share our pain.

Eden’s Trust

Eden’s Trust was set up in memory of Eden who tragically lost her life in 2006 whilst on holiday abroad.

The charity is based in Essex and is running ten weekguided therapy programmes for parents, called Begin to Heal. These programmes are led by highly skilled counsellors and psychotherapists. The programmes empower grieving parents to help themselves and to help others by giving them the tools to strengthen their family and friendships, which so often are ripped apart after the loss of a child. The Begin to Heal approach provides parents with the skills and information they can use in their lives to begin to recover from their loss and to live again – albeit differently.

Eden’s Trust also provides monthly drop-in groups. The Healing Place, which gives parents the chance to share their experiences and to receive and give support to others who have suffered the loss of a child. The Healing Place was set up because participants who had attended the Begin to Heal workshops felt there needed to be some kind of continuation of the work we were doing. They felt safe in an environment where others understood exactly how they were feeling – and they wanted that support to continue. It would be a wonderful world if our children did not die before us – but sadly – that is not the realityfor many of us.

HBBS – Havering and Brentwood Bereavement Service

We are a local non profit making registered charity, which since 1989 has been offering professional and confidential counselling to adults and more recently children who are struggling to come to terms with bereavement or loss. We service the community in Havering, Brentwood, Basildon, Wickford, Laindon Pitsea and Billericay, and have counselling rooms in Hornchurch – Brentwood and Vange.

We are run by three part time paid members of staff at our offices in Hornchurch, and have fourteen volunteer counsellors who work out of counselling rooms in Hornchurch, Brentwood and Basildon. All our counsellors are carefully selected, having qualified at diploma or degree standard, or may be in the final stages of working for these qualifications under close supervision.

Milton Keynes Bereavement Service

Milton Keynes Bereavement Service has been supporting the local community through bereavement for over 20 years. The Milton Keynes Bereavement Project began in 1979 with twelve volunteers, trained to support people who had been bereaved. Momentum

Momentum is a registered charity established in 2004 which aims to help children (up to the age of 17) and the families of children, undergoing treatment for cancer in Surrey and South West London. Momentum was set up by parents who have first hand experience of these life-changing events, with the simple goal of trying to help others in similar circumstances.

Momentum assists children undergoing treatment and their families in the following ways:

Through the provision of equipment and the improvement of the facilities in local hospitals, where children undergoing cancer treatment will typically spend prolonged periods. Currently we are working with the Paediatric Department at Kingston Hospital.
By organising events at which children with cancer and their siblings have the opportunity to meet with other children who share their circumstances.
By offering mutual support for parents and families.

The Alder Centre provides services for anyone affected by the death of a child of any age (ranging from miscarriage to adult children) and for any reason, including stillbirth, termination, accidental, violent or suicidal death and death following acute or chronic illness. The Centre also offers training for Health Care Professionals.

The Alder Centre works in a way that is based on including all and recognising individual differences. Some people prefer the comfort and guidance of other bereaved parents and others that of qualified and trained professionals. The Centre provides both types of support.

Child Death Helpline

The Child Death Helpline is a helpline for anyone affected by the death of a child of any age – from prebirth to adult, under any circumstances, however recently or long ago. The helpline aims to provide a quality freephone service to anyone affected by the death of a child.

A caller to the Helpline may be anyone affected by a child’s death, from pre-birth to the death of an adult child however, recently or long ago, and whatever the circumstances (stillbirth, illness, accident, murder, suicide). For a parent, their son or daughter will always be their child, irrespective of age. We receive calls and support parents whose child was of any age when they died.

We offer a confidential, safe environment within which a caller can talk openly about the child’s life and death. Callers are given the opportunity to freely express their worries and emotions. We provide support not only at times of crisis but also for the ongoing needs of callers over their lifetime.

Inquest

INQUEST was founded in 1981. It is a small charitable organisation with a staff team of ten and the only organisation in England and Wales that provides a specialist, comprehensive advice service to bereaved people, lawyers, other advice and support agencies, the media, MPs and the wider public on contentious deaths and their investigation.

Our casework priorities are deaths in custody (police, prison, immigration detention and deaths of detained patients) and our focus on deaths in custody and the monitoring of such deaths means that we are at the forefront of uncovering patterns and trends. Within this area we have particular concerns about the deaths of women, black people, young people, and people with mental health problems that reflect our commitment to challenging discrimination. This is both in terms of the treatment and care received by the deceased in custody and the experience of bereaved relatives following the death.

Arising from our casework and related areas we develop policy proposals and undertake research to lobby for changes to the inquest and investigation process, reduce the number of custodial deaths and improve the treatment and care of those within the institutions where the deaths occur.

Hope Again is a website designed for young people by young people. It is part of Cruse Bereavement Care’s Youth Involvement Project and here to support people after the death of someone close.

The website is run by Cruse Bereavement Care, which is a national charity there to support people after someone close to them has died.

Because RD4U is aimed at young people, Cruse has a responsibility to make sure that everything that goes onto the site is safe. This means that we will read all messages, stories and poems before we put them online, and sometimes we will change or edit them. One of the main things we do is take out email addresses, phone numbers or anything else that could identify someone. This is to stop people who want to target and hurt children and young people.

RD4U is staffed mainly by volunteers, with a few paid workers who work on the site part-time. This means that messages, stories, poems etc. don’t get put online straight away. Sometimes you will have to wait a few days. We know this can be frustrating, and we would like to ask you to bear with us until we can make things quicker.

Provides support and befriending to those bereaved as a result of meningitis or septicamia, in addition to giving information about the disease. The helpline regularly takes calls from bereaved people during the night time hours, when many feel the pain of their loss most deeply. My Blue Heart

My Blue heart is an idea born from the knowledge that bereaved people often need a way to show others they are grieving. The badges convey the message `I carry your heart in mine’. They are intended for anyone who has suffered a great loss, for those who are recently bereaved or who just need to show they are missing someone special that day. We hope they will provide a way to communicate loss and give others the opportunity to show compassion and support.

All profits from the sale of My Blue Hearts will be used to help bereaved families in the local community. In particular, we aim to support the brothers, sisters, cousins and friends of children who have died, helping them to understand their loss and find positive ways forward.

Paul’s Fund

Paul’s Fund is a charitable trust that makes grants for a holiday break to young adults aged approx. 18 to 30 who, amongst other criteria, have been bereaved through the loss of a child. The holidays are to be taken at Paul’s Place which is located in the delightful village of Georgeham near Croyde on the beautiful North Devon coast and offers both B&B and Self-Catering accommodation. Grants from Paul’s Fund will cover the full accommodation costs of up to six people (the young adult plus a partner, family members or a friend) along with travel and daily allowances. The self catering cottage only accommodates two people but the B&B has three guest rooms (twin and double).

Place2Be

The Place2Be is a charity working inside schools to improve the emotional well-being of children, their families and the whole school community.

The Place2Be was established in 1994 in response to increasing concern about the extent and depth of emotional and behavioural difficulties displayed in classrooms and playgrounds.

By giving children the chance to explore their problems through talking, creative work and play, we enable them to cope now and make better-informed decisions about their lives and help prevent more serious mental health and behavioural problems in later life. (SAMM) Support after Murder and Manslaughter

When you have suffered the traumatic death of a loved one, it can be very difficult for you to make the initial call to the SAMM helpline regardless of how long it is since you were bereaved. Perhaps you can ask a family member, a friend, or your family liaison officer to make the call on your behalf.

We will then contact you at your convenience. You may want support via our helpline into the national office, or we can refer you to a local contact if there is one in your area. Saying Goodbye

The loss of a baby is a devastating and traumatic experience for the mother, father and those close to them. And yet the life of a baby who dies before 24 weeks gestation is not recorded with a certificate which leaves the parent with no official recognition of the baby’s life.

The numbers involved are surprising, with approximately one in four pregnancies ending in miscarriage. Many who experience miscarriage are left reeling with little sense of how to commemorate a baby who once held all the promise of a life to be lived.

Events company CCEM is looking to change that, by setting up a series of commemorative services at churches, minsters and cathedrals across the UK. Modern medicine is both extremely complex and in most cases, expensive – which is perhaps why in recent years there has been a growing movement towards alternative and complementary therapy.

Our counselling service is open to any person resident in the borough of Brent, male or female and of any age, ethnic origin, culture, religion or disability.

We are a registered charity offering confidential bereavement counselling and support by trained volunteers. This service amongst others provides counselling for parents whose children have died.

Camden City – Islington & Westminster Bereavement Service

Counselling which can be either during the day or evening, is provided by trained and supervised volunteer counsellors on a regular weekly basis. The number of sessions needed may vary from between one or two – to periods of up to two years.

People who use the service may have lost a baby in pregnancy, or have had to endure the death of a partner, child, lover, parent, relation, friend or colleague in many different circumstances. The deaths may have been caused by illness, accident, suicide, murder, war or natural causes. Very often people may experience a loss or life event that brings up old memories or feelings from earlier bereavements.

Many families find contact with people who knew their child and who can understand some of what they are going through can be genuinely helpful as they cope with the grieving process. We know that every family will cope with bereavement in a way that is right for them, therefore we aim to offer support that is flexible to individual needs and that reflects the culture and values of the individual.

SLOW Group – Surviving the loss of your world

Slow is a support group run by bereaved parents for bereaved parents. Whether it is weeks, months or years since you have lost your child, you are welcome here.

Slow hold a weekly informal drop in at their base in Islington, North London. SLOW aim to provide a quiet place to meet, where parents can be with others for mutual support, to have a cup of tea, listen, share or just have some space.

Sure Start & City and Hackney Mind

Sure Start and City and Hackney Mind are working together to provide this service to support and work alongside parents and carers to improve the health, education and social opportunities for children under the age of 5.

If you are a parent or a guardian of a child under 5 years old, and live within the Queensbridge and Dalston Sure Start area, you can make use of the counselling service.
Having a family may bring up issues or concerns that you would like to discuss with some one.

The Base 51 Counselling Service offers young people a safe and confidential space in which there is an opportunity to explore, identify and understand past and present experiences. Our aim is help young people discover new ways of coping and to feel and think better about themselves and their lives and promote greater well-being.

Being a human being is a very complicated thing and involves all sorts of stuff including happy/sad/ easy/difficult/fair/unfair etc. etc. – its all part of life.

Very often, and for lots of different reasons young people don’t want to discuss problems with family or teachers – and that’s why we are here; to offer you extra help and support. We want to make sure that you’re not dealing with difficult issues that are making you sad – angry and unhappy on your own.

Children Are Butterflies

Children Are Butterflies is a Northampton based charity. We offer practical and financial support when arranging a funeral that was probably not expected and not planned for, and more importantly, emotional support through an established network of parents and families who have suffered similar losses. The Laura Centre

The Laura Centre Charity offers bereavement counselling for parents and children. They are located in Leicester and offer a variety of services for families. The Laura Centre is now the sole project of the charity COPE. Gail and Harry Moore founded COPE in 1988 initially focusing on services for children with cancer and their families. Following the sad death of their daughter Laura from Leukaemia – Gail and Harry became aware of the lack of support for families bereaved of a child. This led to them opening the Laura Centre in 1991 to provide theraputic support to anyone bereaved of a child or young person.

Nottingham Counselling Service

Nottingham Counselling Service (NCS) has been providing counselling services in Nottingham for over 30 years and is one of the most respected and established providers of counselling services and therapy in the East Midlands – UK.

Established in 1977 – NCS is fully accredited by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Over the years – our counsellors have provided support to thousands of people enabling people like you to take advantage of the health and wellbeing benefits that our counselling services have to offer.

As an independent – registered charity based in the centre of Nottingham – we are dedicated to providing the best possible counselling services – therapy and therapeutic support to men and women aged 18 and over – living – working or studying in Nottinghamshire – UK.

The aim of our service is to provide accessible and inclusive counselling.

However – as a self-funding charitable organisation we need to ask most of our clients to pay something towards their counselling in order to keep our service viable. The range of charges is designed to take account of income and personal circumstances.

PASIC (Parents Association of Seriously Ill Children)

Supporting families of children and young people diagnosed with cancer – leukaemia and brain tumours – receiving treatment at the Nottingham Childrens Hospital.

PASIC – or Parent’s Association for Seriously Ill Children – was formed in 1977 by parents and a hospital consultant. It was felt there was a need for support and that the best kind of support would come from parents who had shared a similar experience. PASIC has now grown and is currently supporting over 400 families throughout the East Midlands.

PASIC helps Parents to provide mutual support at times of need and also assists the Chaplaincy department by providing support at the annual remembrance service.
